My work starts first and foremost with my interest in and passion for a subject. It may be the beauty and vulnerability of a landscape, but equally a place, people and their culture, or a theme that moves or fascinates me. From that involvement comes the desire to tell something about it.

Images are my main language. That is why I often work in photographic series: they give me the space to approach a subject from different angles and build a story. Sometimes this results in a compact triptych, sometimes in a more extensive series.

Film, with movement, sound and time, offers me other ways to build a story and atmosphere. In my photo books, photography, image selection and sequence, design and text come together as parts of one whole.

Technique is never the starting point. My photographic and technical knowledge mainly gives me the freedom to capture and shape a subject as I see it. Technique serves the image — and ultimately the story I want to tell.
